Position Summary

The Quality Manager in a manufacturing organization manages the Quality function, ensures that the related Company objectives are defined, agreed and achieved, including the accuracy of data, availability of information, development, implementation and management of systems, the quality of all QA/QC processes and the management of specific improvement projects. The role of Quality within the organization is also very closely linked to continuous improvement and as such the role is also a focal point for all continuous improvement initiatives and programmes. 

Principal Activities

  • Develop, implement, maintain and control of the Company management systems:
    • ISO 9001
    • ASME U and U2
    • Pressure Equipment Directive
    • Hazardous Area Products (ATEX)
  • Assist in a programme of continuous improvement with relation to process quality and productivity, standardization of products/processes, ease of manufacture, value engineering, problem solving etc., leading specific initiatives where necessary
  • Take responsibility for ensuring the customer's and company's future requirements related to the quality functions can be met e.g. quality improvement strategy development, management system development, manpower planning, new procedure implementation, development of capital expenditure proposals etc.
  • Ensure that adequate procedures, systems and practices are introduced, updated and continuously improved to meet internationally recognised standards and to ensure that the required documentation is in place.
  • Oversee the day to day management of the quality function ensuring that quality problems with suppliers, internal concerns and customer complaints  are addressed promptly and are investigated thoroughly, to ensure robust corrective and preventative actions are implemented. 
  • Provide for the training and development of personnel in order to:
    • develop a professional and flexible team
    • maximise the utilisation of resources
    • provide for succession planning
    • identify training/development needs
    • monitor and appraise individual and team performance
  • Keep up to date with the latest developments related to management systems, and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as an information/knowledge resource for other functions
  • Maintain company library of standards and other quality related literature/publications
  • Maintain register of calibrated equipment
  • Manage employees’ daily activities to ensure production efficiencies
  • Ensure inspections meet the production schedule
  • Work with Planning and Manufacturing to set priorities
  • Provide daily / weekly metrics for throughput, first pass yield, etc
  • Manage employees’ hours and schedule overtime as required
  • Inspect product to ensure all regulatory, code, contract and drawing requirements are met
  • Notify the appropriate function when there are questions on product quality, drawing requirements, etc
  • Support all 3rd party inspections and audits
  • Hold daily / weekly team meetings
  • Train employees in fundamentals of production inspection as well as cross train the staff in all facets of the inspection process
  • Assign tasks and projects to employees
  • Counsel employees and provide verbal or written disciplinary actions as required
  • Maintain work area, equipment and supplies in a safe and orderly condition
  • Set goals and conduct annual performance reviews
  • Meet attendance and punctuality requirements for the position
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Job Requirements


Knowledge Skills & Abilities

    • Knowledge and application of international pressure vessel code and regulatory requirements including ASME VIII Div 1 and 2, PD5500 and Pressure Equipment Directive.
    • Knowledge and application of quality systems for hazardous area products, (ATEX)
    • Technical knowledge and skills related to the inspection and testing of engineered products.
    • Working knowledge of continuous improvement processes such as DMAIC, Lean or Six Sigma
    • The ability to define a quality improvement strategy, objectives, principles, systems and procedures.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written), especially the ability to express oneself articulately and to discuss technical specifications with others.
    • Knowledge of auditing procedures, systems and policies related to management systems
    • An understanding of analysis techniques related to quality improvement.
    • A commitment to and capability of developing others and sharing knowledge and understanding is critical.
    • The ability to demonstrate drive and enthusiasm and lead by example.
    • A commitment to a continuous personal and professional development which will ensure that knowledge and skills reflect best practice.Relevant experience as a Supervisor in a manufacturing environment
    • Direct hands on experience working in a quality / inspection function
    • Results oriented, with sound judgment
    • Excellent demonstrated analytical, critical thinking, and strategic skills
    • Ability to perform multi-faceted projects in rapidly changing environment
    • Resourceful and well organized
    • Hands on familiarity of inspection tools and gauging (calipers, micrometers, ring and plug gauges, bore micrometers, height gauges, etc.)
    • Must have strong knowledge of GD&T and understanding drawing requirements
    • Experience running a CMM a plus
    • Must have an understanding of ERP system functions
    • Must have strong computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office


    • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering, with at least five years’ relevant experience in a Quality role.
    • Lean or Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification preferred
