DIRECT REPORTING: VP Distributed Valves



Position Summary

The Product Manager, DV sets & drives the product roadmap for the Distributed Valve product line by gathering customer input; tracking market trends; working with internal & external Sales/Rep teams to understand key market drivers and opportunities; and working with Engineering to ensure product viability & on-time delivery. The successful candidate will synthesize qualitative and quantitative inputs to prioritize and manage the portfolio to ensure that the product & product line are valuable, profitable, usable, and feasible. The product manager has responsibility for the entire product life cycle from product conception, though development, market introduction, maturity, and sunset/EOL.

Principal Activities

Product portfolio management: 

  • Identify and prioritize valve markets for cultivation. Develop and maintain market model that includes market sizing, growth, competitive activity, customer, regulatory and technology factors to guide strategic discussions on target markets.
  • Develop and maintain technology and product roadmaps
  • Own product definition and development process, including:
    • Articulating clear and accurate market and product requirements
    • Developing strong and compelling business cases to support requirements
    • Defining winning strategies/approaches where appropriate to engage third parties in developing and delivering solutions that open market opportunities
  • Collaborate with Engineering to ensure ideation and concept activities are focused on the most compelling business and technical problems in our target markets
  • Ensure ongoing profitability of the entire product portfolio on a part-number level.
  • Support the revenue & margin forecasting process.
  • Support Quality improvements to the product portfolio. Bring market & customer perspective to the Quality team.
  • Manage delivery of new product development projects: on time/on spec. 

Go to market responsibilities:

  • Enumerate key product benefits, differentiation, and positioning. Clearly communicate these to regional marketing/sales teams, to rep network, and to end customers.
  • Understand market and customer requirements through robust VOC practices and sound competitive intelligence.
  • Identify and execute commercial/pricing strategies to ensure the organization is pursuing the most promising and valuable business opportunities.
  • Contribute to channel and sales strategies to ensure achievement of business growth objectives.

Job Requirements


Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Robustness/quality of market research, customer insights/needs identification, and opportunity identification.
  • Stability of product roadmap and completion of key milestones feeding the development cycle (measured by both the quality of inputs, including Market Requirements Specification & business case to the development cycle, as well as timeliness in hitting product planning specific milestones)
  • Completeness of product portfolio
  • Delivery of business case revenue and margin targets on delivered products
  • Market share in key identified growth markets/opportunities
  • Ability to work with others inside and outside the team.
  • Creativity in problem solving and innovation
  • Relationship with Customers and End-Users, Engineering & Operations teams, Regional Sales & Rep Sales network.

Education & Experience

  •  BA/BS required, preference for engineering/technical degree or strong demonstration of technical competency
  • Five or more years of experience in B2B product management / product life cycle management / product marketing in a technical environment
  • Proven ability to identify market trends and technology shifts, and develop and execute successful product plans and roadmaps
  • Demonstrated product line management, including lifecycle management of products
  • Demonstrated experience in fluid control applications and/or the oil & gas sector a definite plus
  • MBA desirable
  • Ability to travel 20-35% of time.
