Manufacturing Supervisor

Position Overview

The Operations Supervisor has broad responsibility and leadership for overall operation of the facility.  The position reports to the Plant Manager.  The VSM ensures a safe work environment, maximizes profitable growth, drives quality improvements, provides premier customer service, develops technically qualified workforce, and reduces operating costs, inventories and lead times through continuous improvements.  Oversees day-to-day activities to meet daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly expectations.  The position partners with engineering, supply chain and customer service on short-term and long-term improvements to the value stream.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Has responsibility and accountability for operations processes and performance across all shifts and weekends.
  • Takes active ownership of the P&L including cost analysis and opportunities, product line margin, and manufacturing productivity.
  • Consistently ensures that area job responsibilities are promptly and efficiently carried out and fosters a high level of staff performance.
  • Oversees the execution and control of safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance goals to support plant wide metrics.
  • Is accountable for Lean activities including functioning as “Lean Champion” through daily coaching in Lean tools and methodologies.
  • Creates the basis for continuous improvement and employee empowerment by ensuring that standardized work/processes are followed, countermeasures implemented and the area is compliant with safety requirements. Additionally drives continuous improvement in area of responsibility relative to business objectives (labor efficiencies, process efficiencies, 5S, etc.).
  • Prioritizes and organizes short term and long term goals and activities in accordance with business objectives.
  • Has direct management responsibility for supervisors in assigned area including employee relations, team building, performance management, and professional development.
  • Ensures supervisors provide effective cross-training for the associates, including backups from other areas to assure a continuous and smooth running value stream. This training is the foundation of a culture that stops to fix problems in order to get quality right the first time.
  • Identifies and addresses opportunities for improvement relative to safety, quality, delivery, and cost metrics and personnel development.


Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly manages production supervisors and has indirect management responsibility for all associates within the plant.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s guidelines and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees.  Also, planning, assigning and directing work; appraising, rewarding and disciplining employees.




Job Requirements



Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Engineering, Manufacturing/Production (or related technical degree) from an accredited four-year college or university with a minimum of five to seven years of solid supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment. In lieu of a degree seven to ten years of solid supervisory experience is required. 

  • Demonstrated effective leader with ability to coach, assess, evaluate, and develop team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey information and ideas in a variety of media to a variety of different groups.
  • Strong understanding of Lean principles and methodologies with proven track record in driving continuous improvement via Lean tools.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize, balance, and manage multiple efforts with strong results/goal orientation.
  • Solid analytical skills and solution-driven thinking; ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to take the initiative being action oriented and driving for results. Must be flexible and have a willingness to work within changing priorities.
  • Must have strong business and financial acumen.
  • Must be able to work and influence across functions in a matrixed organization.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and prior experience working with MRP systems.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
