POSITION DETAILS - Machinist Technical Lead

Position Summary

The Machinist Technical Lead will collaborate with Mechanical Engineers and Production Managers and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to create and maintain effective training plans and learning solutions for new hires and cross-training.  Provide refresher training on machines to improve individual and organizational performance, and quality standards. This position will rely heavily on your knowledge, expertise, and ability to make sound decisions and judgements. The ideal candidate is able to apply reasoning skills to understand problems and make decisions. They are also highly adaptable and thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. 

Principal Activities

Demonstrated ability to operate manual and CNC machinery for the manufacture of metal components to specific print dimensions and tolerances.

Work from engineering drawings and specifications to manufacture metal components. Use gages and instrumentation for adherence to ultra-precision tolerances. Must be able to work independently and use good judgment. Problem Solve in the following areas: 

Quality, Tooling, Productivity,

Throughput, and Maintenance.

Must understand basic program structure and perform shop floor programs as required. Operate and understand manual and CNC machinery. Support Lean Initiatives / Continuous Improvement. Perform other duties as responsibilities necessitate.

Scope/Supervision:  Reports directly to the Manufacturing Supervisor.  Interacts with all manufacturing support departments as well as suppliers and customers as necessary.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibility:  The employee will perform routine and repetitive work while maintaining a high standard of quality and quantity.  The duties will include but not be limited to the following:

 

Proficient operation and troubleshooting on 4+ critical work centers/operations within a department

Inspect components of unit prior to assembly. Build and assemble pump according to instructions. Disassemble and inspect as required.

Make necessary inspection checks and chart dimensions as required, to insure accuracy of part due to tool wear or deflection.

Select and set proper holding devices, fixtures, and necessary attachments; layout as required. Position part or parts to be machined on machine table using lifting equipment as required; clamp in position for machining to avoid springing or damage to finished surfaces.

Adjust and set cutting tools in tool changers or heads, grind single point cutting tools as required; select proper speeds and feeds; select and set attachments such as dividing heads and rotary index table as required.

Machine a variety material of work such as castings, forgings, weldments, and bars requiring separate machining to co-related dimensions and surface involving operations such as milling and drilling of all kinds, hand tapping, boring, reaming, and turning.  Surface and OD Grinding.

During automatic cycle time operator is to perform miscellaneous operations such as preparing next piece for machine, simple deburring, or the operation of supplemental machines.

  • Responsible for ongoing training across value streams as required.  As the Machinist Technical Lead, you will be responsible for monitoring a validating competency of machine operators, providing prompt and objective coaching and counseling; and coordinating, planning, and assigning/performing work.
  • Oversee new hire training, continuing/refresher training, incident training and evaluation, machine specific training, and other training as needed by the business
  • Partner with Engineering and Quality leaders to ensure successful execution of training needs including resource planning, measuring training effectiveness
  • Ensure areas are technically accurate and achieve training purpose.
  • Review assigned training plans and materials for improvement opportunities on a continuous basis.
  • Document needed processes and material and skill gaps
  • Perform corrective actions to bring units into specification and coordinate with Quality department for verification. 
  • Ensure tooling, machine, parts, and work area are regularly cleaned and maintain good production and quality output. 
  • Utilize Lean tools to streamline processes, provide feedback on production status, and support fellow machinists when needed. 
  • Performs all Machine Operator functions to produce quality parts based on provided specifications as required.
  • Performs setup/operations on specialty machines.
  • Recommends program changes and submits program change requests to programmers/engineer and/or updates coding as applicable.
  • Performs preventive maintenance such as inspecting/replacing fluid levels; inspecting/replacing filters and belts; performing visual inspection; and operating a refractometer.
  • Solves tooling issues by identifying productivity of tooling, evaluating tooling performance, and evaluating new tooling requirements.
  • Performs routine dimensional and visual inspection of product per procedure, specification or print using basic measuring equipment (calipers, micrometer, scale, indicators, and SPC equipment).
  • Maintains safety practices related to machining; (wear protective clothing, eye glasses, as required).
  • Participates in set up reduction/process improvement teams to increase process efficiencies.
  • Trains others on Machining skills through on the job training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of CNC machines, precision measuring equipment and their applications, and how to set up required machines and tools. 

Knowledge of geometric dimensioning, tolerancing, job clearance, and advanced math skills used to calculate material fabrication. 

Proficient with computer software, such as Microsoft Outlook, CAM/CAD software, and ERP software. 

Demonstrated ability to establish priorities to meet project goals, work independently, and adapt to a changing work environment with competing demands. 

Capable of reading blueprints and drawings; learning new technology; adapting to changing events; and using reasoning to work effectively. 

Education & Experience

  • AS Degree preferred
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience proficient operation and troubleshooting on 4+ critical work centers/operations within a department
  • Minimum of five years of experience operating and programming manual or CNC machines in a mid to heavy manufacturing environment; or the equivalent of experience, training, and/or certification combined. Proficiency with high precision grinding operations a plus.
