ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

BUSINESS: Hale Hamilton Valves Ltd

LOCATION: Uxbridge

REPORTING TO: Head of Engineering

 

POSITION DETAILS

 

Key Tasks and Activities

  1. System level design of the control architecture and associated motor/actuator drives and instrumentation to control Hale Hamilton system products. These typically consist of assemblies of pneumatic or hydraulic valves that perform flow and pressure control of gases or liquids to perform some function in a customer’s system.  For example they range from stand-alone products such as gas cylinder filling systems to large pressure control panels that interface with a factory SCADA systems.
  1. Working from a customer specification, or an internally generated brief, in collaboration with Mechanical Engineers who will be addressing the design of the fluid control aspects of the system, the Control & Instrumentation Engineer will deal with all the electrical or electronic equipment necessary to create a fully integrated control system that delivers the function and performance required.
  1. The work requires a versatile electrical/electronic who can cover a wide range of technologies including programmable logic controllers, and the programming thereof, instrumentation for measuring various parameters in the system, variable speed motor drives, servo-drives, P&ID control loops, interfaces with SCADA systems and commonly used communication protocols. May need to supervise and assist in-house or contract personnel in wiring, assembly, factory testing and site commissioning. On occasion the work may require overseas travel and unsocial hours.
  1. A key requirement will be the ability to acquire a level of technical expertise in specified technical or market areas with a detailed knowledge of appropriate products that meet the requirements of that sector and how they would be applied in our systems. The role will need close collaboration with our Sales and Product Management teams, and with customers, to support proposal activity and on-going project management.
  1. To ensure Company compliance with customer technical standards and statutory directives, typically European directives, insofar as they apply to electrical/electronic equipment fitted to our systems (LoVo, ATEX etc.) Where necessary, develop an understanding of regulatory requirements and technical standards that apply in other jurisdictions and market areas where our products may be sold.
  1. To work alone or in a small team depending on the scope of the project and to provide technical leadership and direction relating to electrical/electronic control systems for staff at all levels in the company that may be assigned to the project.
  1. To develop electrical and electronic skills within a predominantly mechanical engineering company and contribute to the Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS); coaching, mentoring and supporting Engineering staff, in particular young engineers, encouraging them to develop their skills and achieve professional status.

 

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Contribute to business improvement activities, specifically Kaizen events, and operating in such a way as to bring about continuous improvement overall.
  1. Ensure smooth working relationships with other areas of the Company. Encourage co-operative working between departments and staff to achieve the best results at all times.
  1. Supervise the implementation, use, upgrading and day to day use of the Engineering departments Computer Aided Design and Product Data Management and Analytical facilities insofar as they apply to electrical and electronic control systems

Job Requirements

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Overall business performance - at or above budget level

  • Engineering department efficiency and effectiveness (in terms of output and meeting defined requirements)

  • Engineering accuracy and error rate improvements

  • Support of on time delivery objectives of the company

  • Maintenance of closure rate of control system related Corrective action Reports (CARs) and In Service Defect reports (ISDRs) at target levels

Education & Experience

  • Apprentice trained, HNC/HND electrical/electronic engineer with at least 7 years’ experience post apprenticeship in the field of controls and instrumentation. 
  • To work on projects and to develop the electrical/electronic skills set in the company. 
  • The role would suit an open-minded proactive, versatile and out-going individual who is happy working alone, or in a team, and who likes to be involved in a job from start to finish.
