Position Summary

The Sr. Design Engineer-Products will be responsible for providing and supporting teamwork and coordination in engineering and product design projects to investigate, evaluate, and develop new applications for existing equipment and systems. Support and drive the new product development stage gate process. Drive and support the Company’s competitive advantage using creative design and formulation of new product lines and enhancements. The incumbent will be able to apply analytical, evaluative, and constructive expertise to design engineering projects, seeing them to completion by assigned deadlines. Recommend improvements to existing product to maximize production and operating cost-effectiveness. Utilize a broad base of knowledge to rapidly and efficiently design, develop, test, maintain, and continuously improve products and reliability.

Principal Activities

  • Drive and support teamwork with manufacturing engineers, design engineers, supply chain, and planners to ensure proper handoff of designs to global manufacturing sites for customer orders.
  • Work and coordinate between the Product Manager and Applications Engineer supporting sales and marketing functions and end customers, as related to application reviews.
  • Design, develop, and update new product requirements, major modifications of existing products, customer prototype qualification, test requirements, and resolve product performance deficiencies.
  • Respond to both customer and internal technical support needs in a timely manner.
  • Lead product line development projects through CIRCOR Stage Gate development process as well as leading VA/VE efforts to support market needs and profitability goals.
  • Ensure excellence in Engineering and limit product liability by driving best practice methods, processes, and tools and applying sound engineering practices.
  • Ensure all product designs comply with the appropriate industry and customer standards, i.e. ASME, NACE, ISO, API, etc.
  • Promote standardized product BOM, material selection, and uniformity in designs.
  • Review and approve technical documentation including but not limited to change orders and requests, drawings, specifications, calculations, bills of material, test plans, and technical reports.
  • Lead the generation of new ideas and document them appropriately for possible patent protection or to reserve as intellectual property.
  • Report on progress of projects and identify critical issues that need to be addressed
  • Analyze product life cycle to provide cost estimates of required local and off-shore labor resources and materials
  • Prepare project schedules for accomplishing related tasks
  • Provide direction and oversight to technicians, field operations, and maintenance activities in fabrication and installation of mechanical and electronic equipment and systems
  • Provide technical guidance to personnel involved with producing design drawings
  • Review and disposition manufacturing issues
  • Develop, release, and maintain documentation in accordance with company and contractual requirements
  • Review, write, and edit reports (i.e. evaluation plans, test results, technical manuals, etc.) to provide recommendations, conclusions, and other data
  • Verify completed work checking dimensions, material, and quantities
  • Assist and direct building, installing, debugging and testing new equipment to ensure production capabilities
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

Job Requirements


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient in computer aided design and analysis (solid modeling with SolidWorks or similar, calculations with MathCAD, Excel or similar)
  • Solid understanding of machine design (fits, tolerances, alignment, bearings, power transmission and other machine components)
  • Working knowledge of blueprints, schematics, piping drawings, site elevation drawings, manufacturing prints, and drafting knowledge (ANSI Y14.5)
  • Understanding of Bill of Material structuring
  • Understanding of patent laws and intellectual property
  • Strong communication, coordination, negotiation, persuasion, building consensus and stakeholder management skills
  • Highly proficient in drawing conclusions and reconciling differences between predicted and actual results
  • Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Proficient understanding and working knowledge of manufacturing practices and processes
  • Working knowledge of design of experiments, testing, data interpretation (e.g. vibration analysis), non-destructive testing, monitoring/failure analysis and equipment failure history analysis
  • Perform stress, strain, and deflection analysis
  • Knowledge of engineering materials
  • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code: Section VIII, Div. I and II (Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels), Section II (Material Specifications and Properties), ASME B31.3 (Piping code), and PAI 600
  • ANSI B16.34 (Valves, Flanged and Threaded)
  • Familiarity with FEA (stress, pressure vessel, thermal, kinematic analysis; CFD), valve, pressure vessel, and actuator design (HOV, MOV, AOV), and hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems a plus
  • Ability to work in a positive, professional, respectful, and collaborative manner with all stakeholders with minimal supervision in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to present technical information to non-technical personnel
  • Ability to travel to customers, potential customers, and industry conferences: up to 20%

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or directly related field of study, Master’s degree in a technical discipline a plus.
  • Eight plus years of directly applicable work experience in a technical environment, or equivalent training and education.
  • Experience with inspection, measurement and testing, and experience in a research and development atmosphere.
  • Experience and competence with in-depth design validation and analysis, utilizing hand calculations, FEA, etc.
  • Professional work experience with industrial valves and petrochemical processes and machine shop experience a strong plus.
